Looking for a unique experience over the holidays? Venture over to the Netherlands to see the Amsterdam Light Festival, organized every year from November to January. The canal belt of Amsterdam lights up with spectacular light sculptures, projections, and art installations.

Butterfly Effect by Masamichi Shimada
Seven gigantic butterflies have landed on the surface of the canal. The butterflies not only rise and fall with the movement of the water caused by passing boats, but their wings glow blue against the dark night.

Experience the open-air exhibition “DISRUPT!” from the Amsterdam waters and visit one of the many art activities during the eighth edition of the festival!

Surface Tension by Tom Biddulph & Barbara Ryan

A journalist passes through a flooded city by boat, reporting on the devastating effects of a major flood – it’s an image that you’ll most likely recognise from the news.

Edition #9: “When Nature Calls” will take place in Amsterdam from November 26, 2020 to January 17, 2021. The Festival invites creators from around the world to submit their proposals for its 9th edition. Edition #9 will spotlight that art can reveal the possibilities and experimental ideas to create a new ecosystem.

Travel Tip: You can watch the beautiful light installations throughout the city by foot, bike or by boat. However, we think that the best way to experience Amsterdam canals is by hiring a private “notary boat” to sail through the canals. When traveling by boat you have the opportunity to see the beautiful light installations up close – it’s really a must-see!
