Traveling to Austria during COVID:

Know before you go

Effective September 15, 2021, the United States has been removed from Austria’s list of countries with low epidemiological risk, which means:

Only Fully Vaccinated travelers will be allowed to enter Austria without a mandatory quarantine. In addition, the validity of the vaccine for any fully vaccinated traveler has been extended to 360 days (one year) after the second/or only inoculation

TRANSIT PASSENGERS are not subject to COVID-19 entry restrictions or mandatory quarantine.

The complete list of regulations can be found here.

Vaccinated Travelers:

FULLY VACCINATED persons and persons who recently recovered from COVID-19 arriving from the U.S. will continue to be allowed to enter Austria without being subject to mandatory quarantine regardless of their travel purpose. Proof of vaccination/recovery (see requirements below) must be presented upon entry. No pre-travel-registration is necessary.

VACCINATION CERTIFICATE (e.g. “CDC COVID-19 Vaccination Card” or Medical Certificate):

  • Accepted COVID-19 vaccines:

    • Two-dose vaccines: BioNtech/Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca, Sinopharm, or Sinovac

    • Single-dose vaccine: Johnson&Johnson/Janssen

  • Start of validity:

    • At the day of full immunization = receipt of the second inoculation with a two-dose vaccine (BioNtech/Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca, Sinopharm, or Sinovac; minimum 14 days beetween the two doses), OR 22 days after receipt of a single dose vaccine (Johnson& Johnson/Janssen)

  • End of validity:

    • 360 days after the second inoculation with a two-dose vaccine or 270 days after inoculation with a single dose vaccine.

    • Booster doses received at least 120 days after the second inoculation (or single inoculation with J&J/Janssen) extend the validity of vaccination status for an additional 360 days starting on the day of receipt of the booster dose.

CERTIFICATE OF RECOVERY (or Medical Certificate):

  • Confirmation of the patient’s recovery from COVID-19 in the past 180 days issued by a medical professional or public authority,

  • OR a positive test for neutralizing COVID-19 antibodies not older than 90 days

Non-Vaccinated Travelers:

UNVACCINATED persons arriving from the U.S. will continue to be allowed to enter Austria but MUST pre-register, present a negative COVID-19 test upon arrival (see requirements below) and subsequently observe 10 days of mandatory quarantine.

  • COVID-19 TEST RESULT(or Medical Certificate):

    • Molecular-biological (PCR/NAAT) or antigen (rapid) test for SARS-CoV-2 accepted (a molecular-biological test is required if the person seeking entry has been to an “area of variants of concern” listed in Annex 2, in the past 10 days before entry)

    • Sample taken no earlier than 72 hours (PCR test) or 48 hours (rapid/antigen test) prior to entering Austria

    • Test results must include: full name and date of birth of the tested person; date and time of the sampling; test result; QR-/barcode or stamp and signature of testing facility

Return to the United States:
